Hypens and History

Cheap-Auto-Insurance.com I know what you may be thinking. The owners of this domain placed the hyphens between the words Cheap, Auto, and insurance because the domain name without the hyphens was not available. Fact is, this is a common misconception and is just not true.

Believe it or not, in 1996 the owners of Cheap Auto Insurance Network, Inc. reserved the domain www.cheap-auto-insurance.com with the hyphens because of their basic internet inexperience and complete naiveté (although, in their defense, search engine marketing ala Google didn’t yet exist). Not only was the domain without the hyphens available but unpurchased, they did not even reserve their domain with .net and .org extensions.

Bottom line; Michael Dortch, owner of Combined Insurance Group, Ltd. and Cheap Auto Insurance Network Inc. thought it looked better and would be easier to read the domain with the hyphens (lots of people still typed in website addresses they wanted to visit). As you can imagine, this history is a source of frustration to management, who dearly wishes they understood the internet better when reserving their first domain.

Before the advent and popularity of the World Wide Web, Your town’s local phone book was pretty much the only ‘search source’ you had when seeking new auto insurance coverage. From the beginning of the 1990's to the present, Cheap Auto Insurance has been a listed entity in Verizon, Yellow Book and other telephone books nationwide. In 1996, Cheap-auto-Insurance.com was one of a hand full of licensed Insurance Brokers on the World Wide Web. In fact; Cheap-Auto-insurance.com was marketing online before Progressive, The Gecko, State Farm and Allstate.

Because of its exclusive use in print and telephone directories, in 1998, Cheap-Auto-Insurance.com applied and was awarded a Pennsylvania State Service Mark for the phrase ‘Cheap Auto Insurance.’ Ten years later, in 2008, Combined Insurance Group felt it was time to continue to protect its Trademark rights on a Federal Level. After a long and very expensive application and review process, the United States Patent and Trademark Office awarded Combined Insurance Group, Ltd. a Federal Trademark for the phrase "Cheap Auto Insurance."
